I think a good option for google maps is to have New Zealand very simple with majority white and something like green and simple without all the layouts and then input the locations manually when you zoom.
Facebook symbols:
Someone pointed me to this webpage and it has lots of symbols and interactive points and icons which are used commonly on IOS I think these will be useful when developing my map further.
